A Dolce Vita trip!

This trip was a great introduction and overview of the Baltic countries and Helsinki. The forest walks were mixed with city walks leaving us with no boring moments and which made it different from the regular hiking trips. We had walks on the beach as well as in the forests while surprised by the wild berries and different types of mushrooms that our leader Andrius educated us on. His excitement about it was contagious. We climbed lighthouses, walked in bogs and rode fun ferries. The contrast between the Cold War museum and the Helsinki library was astonishing in regards of how things had changed. The old cities of Vilnius, Riga and Tallin were the highlights as well as the discovery of the history of these countries and how resilient they had been. Our leader Andrius was also a highlight and a lesson in how to be professional and yet still be funny and entertaining. Our amazing driver kept the comfortable van immaculate. His safe driving was greatly appreciated. The hotels had a great location and overall served the purpose. Helsinki hotel was the best but Panorama hotel in Vilnius was not. It can be upgraded to a more comfortable one. There was no AC and the room was quite small and with only one plug available. Overall a great trip and I am ready to do it again in the future.
Return to The Baltics

Having been on previous “Baltics Winter Walking” (with Exodus), we wanted to return to experience the countryside and enjoy the walks in the National Parks in more conducive conditions and we were certainly not disappointed. We again enjoyed the city visits, this time in the warm sunshine the bars/cafes spilling out on the buzzing sidewalks, but of course at each city remembering the struggle and hardships they endured in previous decades. The 2000 kms we travelled was full on but in a comfortable bus and with a careful and competent driver we made excellent progress on pot hole free highways. We stopped in towns, villages, walked through pine forests down to lake sides, traversed the Baltic Sea on ferries to picturesque islands each with their own character. Our ultimate ferry across to Helsinki was more like being on a cruise ship, an array of food outlets and a huge shopping mall.

My 18 year old son and I decided to try this tour, our first cycling trip. We had never travelled to Finland or biked for five straight days before. We had a fabulous time. The documentation was very thorough and accurate, the locations were lovely and the staff was very helpful. The Turku Archipelago route was well traveled by other cyclists, the drivers were respectful of cyclists and it was relatively quiet on the roads. We got lucky and didn't have much rain however we had a couple of windy days that made biker a bit more difficult. The scenery was gorgeous and peaceful. We took the manual bikes and therefore would note that the route was moderately difficult on certain parts of the trip (especially the fourth day). There are some decently gravelly roads also. We would highly recommend this tour to others that were looking for what we were: rural, picturesque, Finnish culture, great food, charming lodging, and some physical challenges that made us feel like we worked for our trip (in a good way)!

Finland - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Winter is a good time to plan a holiday to Finland
Brightly coloured houses along the coastline in Helsinki is a beautiful sight

Spending holidays in Finland is like visiting a winter wonderland. However, this northern European nation rarely gets the attention it deserves. Finland is one of the most outstanding and breath-taking countries in the world. In winter, its snow-covered forests, frozen valleys, and endless horizons will transport you to a fairy-tale world. During the summer, tree lines as far as the eye can see, clear blue skies, and untouched lakes will make you want to stay forever. A trip to Finland needs to be in your travel bucket list if it isn’t already. Don’t miss out on some of the most breath-taking landscapes on earth.

Travel Highlights

  • Visit Suomenlinna, which is an 18th century sea fortress and a UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Visit Helsinki Senate Square, a must-see in every visit to Helsinki.
  • Rovaniemi is the “official” home of Santa Claus, and a mere one hour flight from Helsinki.
  • Högberget’s Cave is another outstanding sight that was formed during an ice age.
  • The Legendary Gold Fields of Lapland is full of myths and adventure.

Travel Tips

  • Finland is the land of saunas. It would be a crime to not seek one out while visiting. The country claims to have roughly 3.5 million saunas in all of Finland, which is equivalent to a sauna for every 1.6 people.
  • Thanks to the strong influences from Sweden and Russia, Finnish architecture is one of the most breath-taking ones in Europe. Go for a walk around Helsinki and admire the architecture, especially works by Alvar Aalto.
  • If you’re looking to connect with nature, there’s no better place than Finland. Pack appropriately and head out to the Finnish archipelago for an amazing experience.
  • If you’re not planning on driving, then it’s a good idea to obtain a Rail Pass while in Finland. These passes could save you quite a bit on transportation, and help you get around the country easily.
  • For those who want to visit Finland on a budget, opt for the Fall and Winter months. Prices at these times are, as you might expect, much cheaper than the high season. Frozen Finnish landscapes are truly mesmerizing, which makes it absolutely worth it.
  • If you’re hunting for northern lights, then the winter months are the best times to visit. Sign up for a northern light safari, and go out hunting for northern lights on a snowmobile!

Finland has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Finland before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Finland, do check out our Finland Travel Guide for more information.
