The beginning of March in Tanzania sees warm and mostly dry weather. However, by mid-March, the long rainy season, or “Masika”, begins. During this time, the humidity levels can be high, and the daytime temperature could reach the mid to high thirties. Conversely, nights are a bit cooler at around the 25˚C (77˚F) mark. Afternoon tropical downpours also become more common as the month progresses.

But since Tanzania is a vast country with diverse landscapes and weather patterns, conditions can vary depending on the specific location you plan to visit.

The coastal regions are more humid and may experience occasional rain showers, while the inland areas are typically drier.

If you enjoy adventure and authenticity, Tanzania’s natural beauty during the rainy season is worth experiencing. Below are some of the reasons why you should visit this East African beauty in March.

  • Wildlife safari: The main wildlife attraction during March in Tanzania is the wildebeest calving season, where millions of wildebeests gather in the western Serengeti region and birth thousands of calves near the Grumeti River. Although the frequency of rainfall increases as the month progresses, it is still possible to have an enjoyable safari experience with a good travel plan—head to Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park, which stay relatively dry during March. You can catch sight of migrating birds there. To spot the Big Five, you could head to Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Low crowd: March is considered the low season in Tanzania, which means you can have some of the popular attractions almost to yourself. This makes it an excellent time to visit if you prefer tranquility and see the country’s sites and destinations without being overwhelmed by the tourist rush. Fewer visitors also means more competitive holiday deals.
  • Lush landscapes: The long rainy season begins in March, causing the landscapes to become lush and green. This is a fantastic time to take photographs, as the skies are often filled with dramatic clouds and colors that can create stunning backdrops for wildlife and landscape shots.
  • Kilimanjaro Marathon: The annual Kilimanjaro Marathon takes place in MoCu Stadium, Moshi, either in late February or March every year. The event typically attracts thousands of runners from around the world, who compete in full and half-marathons and a five-kilometer fun run.

If you plan a trip to Tanzania in March, you are in for an adventure. Wildlife photographers, take note! March is the perfect time for embarking on a safari in Serengeti National Park to witness thousands of newborn wildebeest taking their first steps, wildebeest mothers nursing their young, and playful calves trying to keep up with their herds during the great migration. For a chance to see large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, head to Tarangire National Park. Between December and May, the majestic baobab trees bear fruit, creating a picturesque backdrop to spot the elephants.

If you are interested in diving and snorkeling, the waters around Zanzibar and Mafia Island are particularly clear and calm during March. The visibility is excellent for exploring the diverse marine life and vibrant coral reefs.

Birdwatching while on a Lake Manyara National Park safari is another great activity to enjoy in March. With the lush vegetation and blooming wildflowers, the park’s landscapes provide a beautiful setting for birdwatching enthusiasts. The park is home to over 400 species of birds, including flamingos, pelicans, storks, and many other migratory birds that arrive during this time of year.
