Any tour of Southern Africa is likely to revolve around wildlife since this is a part of the world with some of the best safaris on the planet – Botswana is an intriguing and increasingly popular choice. However, there’s more to the region than just animals. A trip to Zimbabwe can include the spectacular Victoria Falls while the coast of South Africa offers whale watching, surfing and shark-cage diving.

I thought the itinerary for this trip was good. Warsaw, Wrocław & Kraków are lovely cities. I would suggest that Auschwitz is added to the itinerary as the majority of the group had booked the trip to visit there. Even with the links provided by Explore, and booking far in advance, one member of our group ended up having to leave the hotel at 2:30am to queue for hours to get tickets. I think if Explore organised this, it would make things much easier for everyone. The traditional Jewish dinner with music was an absolute highlight for me, make sure that stays on the itinerary! The Salt mine was incredible & the Gnome hunting was also fun. While our tour leader was a lovely person, this was her first time doing the trip, which meant things were not always what I've come to expect from an Explore tour leader. She seemed a bit disorganised at times, we didn't get a proper introduction and she didn't always communicate to the entire group. At one point we were having a walking tour and I didn't even realise, I had been told it was later and that this was the walk to lunch! I'm sure though with a few tours under her belt this will change. The local tour guide we had in Wrocław was excellent, very funny. No complaints about the accommodation. The place we stayed in Wrocław, which had been changed last minute, was a bit quirky but not unpleasant. A note about the food, the portions are very large, so you might not spend as much money on food as you would expect. I would recommend this trip but just be aware that some of it is very emotional at times, due to the nature of the places you visit. For the free time in Warsaw, I would suggest visiting the Rising museum. I also did the optional excursion to the Ksiaz Castle in Wrocław which was well worth a visit.

An excellent trip, with the highlight being the mountain gorillas, but there was far more to this trip than I was expecting. The walking safari was also excellent, we were very close to giraffes. There are a lot of cultural experiences in this trip, which are excellent as you get to see how the local communities benefit from tourism and learn about their background. However, these all come with purchasing opportunities 'please buy from us and support this project' etc etc. So beware - do not do all your shopping at the first project! Hotels were better than expected in most cases, however the Kampala hotel could be improved on. It was very noisy with music noise most of the night.

It was a very nice Itinerary some of the stops were a bit higher paced than expected. The Hotel’s were great and our tour guide Vanessa was absolutely wonderful. She was extremely knowledgeable and gracefully helped a few of us with issues we had.

It goes to a great range of places, each with their own unique history. The sites visited are all amazing and worth seeing. The people in each place are welcoming and proud of their history.

Excellent….i think a few less catherdrals and a little more time in Porto, Lisbon and Costa de Sol Betty, our guide could not have been more accomadating. She was very articulate and always informative wherever or whatever we wished to know Overall, great tour

Southern Africa — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Southern African has an amalgamation of some of the best countries in African and it no doubt is the jewel at the southern tip of the continent. Exploring Southern Africa will expose you to extreme desert heat to pearly cool-blue waters and show you natural wonders from dramatic landscapes, endless beaches, and exotic wildlife. A trip through southern Africa typically takes between 2-4 weeks depending on how many countries you want to visit. You can fly between them, but an even better path is on a jeep with regional experts! There’s so much to discover in Southern Africa!

Tour Highlights

  • At the most southern tip of Africa is the glorious city of Cape Town with its natural beauty of Cape Point, Camps Bay, and Table Mountain. Learn about its chaotic history rooted in apartheid and how it rose to be a powerful place full of fresh farm produce, wineries, and mixture of African/European cultures.
  • No trip to Africa would be complete without a safari adventure through the savannah on the back of a jeep! Explore many of the incredible African adventure tours that take you deep through the country where you’ll see life a pack of lions taking down their prey, ancient elephants migrating to water sources, thousands of birds, and so much more. If you’re short on time, you can always venture to Kruger National Park for the quick fix.
  • For those insta-photo seekers, a trip to the Victoria Falls will make the entire trip across Southern African worth your while. Also called “the smoke that thunders”, the Victoria Falls similar to Niagara Falls in size but allows an up-close encounter by standing in pools at the edge to get the best view and photos.

Travel Tips

  • While it’s perfectly possible to travel independently across the country by jumping on different jeeps or buses, it’s highly suggested to book a travel group not only for the ease of travel but also for safety and time.
  • Traveling around Africa does require that you provide proof in most countries that you’ve had yellow fever vaccination and malaria prophylaxis. This is to ensure you don’t pick up anything nasty along the way so be sure to consult your doctor before going.
  • If you’re a westerner or white foreigner, you’ll often hear the term “Mzungu” being yelled your way. Don’t take offense to this or get scared by it. The term loosely means ‘a person who wanders without purpose’ and is said in a friendly manner.
