Ecuador Highlight

What makes Ecuador unique compared to other destinations?

Ecuador condenses what larger countries offer into short distances. In a single day, you can drive from the Andes 3,000 m down through the cloud forest and reach the Amazon Basin, all while crossing distinct ecological zones. The Andes’ volcanic corridor hosts Cotopaxi (5,897 m) and Chimborazo (the closest point to the sun), while the eastern slopes hold biodiversity comparable to the entire Amazon Basin of Brazil. Then there’s the Galápagos, 1,000 km offshore, with strictly regulated ecosystems where each island has evolved species found nowhere else.

Ecuador's Hidden Gem

One lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination in Ecuador and why is it special?

Llanganates National Park between Baños and Tena is rarely visited because of its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather. The legend of Atahualpa’s lost gold hides here, but beyond myth, it’s a mosaic of páramo lakes, dense cloud forest, and endemic orchids. Access requires local guides from Salcedo or Sigchos, and those who trek or ride mules deep inside often see spectacled bears, mountain tapirs, and untouched páramo plateaus.

Ecuadorian Culture

What are some key cultural insights you think travelers should know before arriving in Ecuador?

1. Highland communities are deeply tied to Pachamama (Mother Earth). Ceremonies around solstices, like Inti Raymi, still structure agricultural life. 2. In the Amazon, Kichwa and Waorani communities welcome visitors into chichas (fermented yuca drinks) rituals, and accepting even a small sip is a sign of respect. 3. In both regions, time moves slower; schedules bend around weather, fiestas, and community events. 4. Greeting people with a handshake or “Buenos días” opens doors everywhere, as silence is considered distant or cold.

Tips for Ecuador Travel

Are there any common mistakes travelers make when visiting Ecuador that they could avoid?

1. Altitude mismanagement, such as going straight from sea level to Cotopaxi or Quilotoa. Spend the first night in Quito or Otavalo to acclimate. 2. Underestimating distances, since mountain and jungle roads are winding and 120 km can take four hours. 3. Improper gear, as cotton clothes in the Amazon never dry; bring synthetics and insect repellent with 20–30% DEET. 4. Overpacking for Galápagos, where most boats have strict luggage limits (usually 20 kg plus 5 kg hand luggage). 5. Wildlife touching, even leaning close to marine iguanas or sea lions, violates park rules and can result in fines.

Ecuador in January offers warm sunny days in its coastal regions — perfect for a relaxing beach holiday. Meanwhile, most parts of the Amazon also see drier days and low water levels in the river, creating a perfect condition for spotting caimans, pink river dolphins and other Amazonian wildlife. January also marks the start of the low season in the Andes region of Ecuador, so you will find low tourist crowds in popular tourist destinations during this time. The streets are alive in Ecuador in February, as the carnival festivities begin. Join the locals in one of their biggest celebrations of the year. The start of the Amazon rainy season offers fantastic opportunities to spot wildlife that are more elusive in the dry season, as abundant food supply draws them into the forest canopy. This is also the best time of year for snorkeling and scuba diving around the Galapagos Islands, not only because of the pleasant warm waters but also for a chance to spot manta rays.

Wonderful itinerary. Guides were knowledgeable and patient. Machu Picchu Hotel was very loud with trains, parties and fumes from the trains. Galapagos was one surprise after another. The final hacienda hotel in Quito was breathtaking. By far my favorite accommodation. Great trip.

À really great trip. Great itenery in good company and with a great guide and driver. A great m mix of local culture, hiking in great countryside with beautiful scenery among cloud forests and vulcanos followed by a 5 island hop in the Galapagos. Being land based gave us an opportunity to see more of the islands interiors as well as being able to see a lot of bird life, tortoises and iguanas. We also had 3 snorkeling trips and were fortunate to seeing penguins turtles and reef sharks. Our tour leader and guide Fabian was excellent, very knowledgeable, kind and looked after us very well. It was sad to say goodbye. The local food in Ecuador was excellent and the hotels that we stayed were confortable and usually close to local amenities In conclusion a great trip. Would do again

An Unforgettable Trip to Peru and Ecuador

What an adventure! This holiday combines two iconic destinations into one trip. It's a busy, fast-paced itinerary, full of stimulation and excitement so be prepared! In Peru, as well as enjoying Cusco, you'll visit incredible ruins nearby and in the Sacred Valley and learn so much about the Incas and how they conquered, and then retained control of, vast swathes of South America. Holger's in-depth knowledge of all things Inca helped us to piece together this information into a coherent whole so that we had a real insight into the civilisation. You'll also have the opportunity (for no additional cost) to complete the One Day Inca Trail. Machu Picchu does not disappoint and, as well as being technologically fascinating, is absolutely stunning. In the Galapagos, you'll island hop your way to San Cristobal, Floreana, Isabela, Santa Cruz, Isla Lobos, Bartolome and Las Tintoreras, seeing every kind of wildlife imaginable. The animals really are everywhere, in large numbers and just don't mind you being nearby. It's a hiking, snorkelling and photographic extravaganza (and Richard will share all his videos and photos)!

I really enjoyed listening to the local guide who explained the history of Lima, Peru, and what they are doing to prepare for its 500th anniversary. Our local guide in the Cusco area was very interesting and enjoyable also. Seeing how the colors were made for weaving at the llama and alpaca farm was very interesting also. I enjoyed touring the Incan ruins... they were a lot more interesting than I had ever expected. The many varieties of Peruvian and Ecuadorian cuisine were very tasty. The hotel staff and the staff on our ship were all very accommodating.

Awesome tour, getting to have dinner with locals on their farm and home. Excellent very organized and experienced guide and small group experience. We saw a seal nursing her young, penguins, iguanas, turtles , sea lions and birds in the Galapagos on enjoyable zodiac rides. Visited many islands.
