The Maldives is the tropical destination of your dreams, known for turquoise blue lagoons, pristine white beaches and stilted bungalows. Thanks to its incredible biodiversity and marine wildlife, particularly off the coast of Hulhule Island, this country is prefect for snorkeling tours, swimming and boat cruises. Meanwhile, Malé, the capital, offers cooking classes and cultural, religious and historic sites, including beautiful mosques and colourful homes.

What makes Maldives unique compared to other destinations in Asia?

Unlike the busy cities or mountains found elsewhere in Asia, the Maldives is made up of coral atolls surrounded by soft beaches and clear lagoons. What makes it unique is how closely life is tied to the ocean, the tides, the moon, and the marine environment influence daily routines. Whether you’re visiting a local island or exploring underwater, you’re not just watching nature, you're directly connected to it.

Maldives' Hidden Gem

One lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination in Maldives and why is it special?

Utheemu in the northern Maldives offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, and authentic island life. This island is famed as the birthplace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, a national hero who liberated the Maldives from Portuguese rule in the 16th century. Visiting Utheemu means stepping into Maldivian history through the Utheemu Ganduvaru, the preserved wooden palace of the Sultan, which is open to visitors and gives a rare glimpse into traditional Maldivian architecture and heritage. Utheemu is accessible by domestic flight and speedboat from Malé. The typical route involves a domestic flight to Hanimaadhoo Airport, followed by a short speedboat ride to Utheemu.

What are some key cultural insights you think travelers should know before arriving in Maldives?

The Maldives is a 100% Muslim country, and understanding this context is key to being a respectful and responsible guest especially when visiting islands outside of resort areas. While resort islands operate with more relaxed norms, there are compromises to consider when staying on a local island, particularly around alcohol, dress and public behaviour. Travellers should dress more modestly when walking through communities and avoid wearing swimwear outside of the designated bikini beaches. If you’re visiting a mosque dressing respectfully is even more important and full length leg coverings required for both men and women. Fridays are the holy day in the Maldives, and many services pause for Jummah prayers around midday. Shops close, and schedules adjust slightly, so it’s helpful to plan around this. It’s also important to note that alcohol is strictly prohibited on local islands. You won’t find bars, and it is illegal to bring alcohol into the country or consume it outside of licensed resort islands and liveaboards. Travelers looking to enjoy a drink can do so at resort day visits or safari boats, which are licensed to serve alcohol.

Tips for Maldives Travel

Are there any common mistakes travelers make when visiting Maldives that they could avoid?

A common misconception is that the Maldives is only about luxury resorts. While resorts have their place, travelers who don’t explore beyond them miss out on the real Maldives, its rich culture and welcoming local communities. Visiitng local islands allows for more meaningful connections with Maldivians, a deeper understanding of local life, and the chance to directly support small businesses and families. Another frequent oversight is not checking local customs and dress codes when planning excursions to inhabited islands. The Maldives is a Muslim country, and modesty should be considered on local islands as a mark of respect for local customs. Swimwear is acceptable at resort islands, bikini beaches, or private boats, but not in villages or public spaces. Respecting these norms not only avoids uncomfortable situations, but also shows cultural awareness. Packing is another area where travelers often go wrong. Many people bring far more than they need. Life in the Maldives is laid-back and barefoot-friendly, you won’t need high heels or formalwear. Lightweight, breathable clothing, a sunhat, flip flops and reef-safe sunscreen are the key essentials. Many travelers underestimate the sun here. The Maldives sits close to the equator, and even on cloudy or overcast days, UV exposure is intense. Not packing or reapplying enough high-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen can result in painful sunburns, often within just 20–30 minutes of exposure. It’s one of the easiest mistakes to avoid and one of the most uncomfortable if you don’t.

Maldives Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Maldives tours

Greg | Traveled in April

A very chilled and relaxed holiday with a guide and crew who looked after our every need and showed us the best snorkelling around the Maldives. Swam with sharks, dolphins and all manner of tropical fish close up. Food was amazing all week and to have a meal on a deserted island was magical.

This was our second time on this trip and it didn’t disappoint. Our tour leader (Shuja) was excellent, finding new reefs to explore, ensuring we all managed to see what we were hoping for in a fun and safe manner. He also helped to take amazing photos and videos for us whilst snorkelling. The boat crew were very professional, especially the chef who made plentiful, healthy and delicious meals, catering for food allergies and intolerances. I would recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys swimming and snorkelling, we hope to be back for a third time!

Our Sri Lanka tour was really wonderful - wide-ranging but well-enough paced to avoid overload. The Adam’s Peak climb was more challenging than expected but worth doing. It’s just a shame that we had a 300 step climb to get to our rooms afterwards. Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Galle and the ancient Buddhist sites were really memorable, although Wilpattu game reserve was disappointing as we drove for a long time on forest tracks with little to see. Udawalawe and the elephant transit camp the following week were much better. Our guide was exceptional and went above and beyond on a couple of notable occasions. Details such as snack and toilet breaks had been well-planned and almost all of the meals were excellent. There were just a few too many visits to craft workshops (woodcarving, batik, jewellery) as, although they were interesting, we felt like there was an expectation to make a purchase. The dhoni cruise in The Maldives was fascinating with some excellent snorkelling. The first two days were a little slow, however with little to see or do apart from the daily snorkel trips twice a day. For anyone not wanting to snorkel, it could have been a little disappointing. The sea life was stunning and our well-informed guide provided some expert knowledge about the wildlife and about the country and culture as a whole. Overall, the trip was an exceptional experience and I would highly recommend.

The Sri Lanka tour was excellent. The tour was full on, visiting 2 - 4 sites each day. We saw temples, took safari rides to see the wildlife, looking at landscapes from beaches, through rainforests, and up to the highlands and mountains. We saw a huge variety of animals and birds in the national parks. Our guide Mimi was kindness personified, and gave us a fascinating insight into the country's history and culture. The hotels and restaurants were great. The Maldives cruise was based on board a fairly traditional boat. We were well looked after by the whole crew, and visited lots of sites to snorkel and see reefs, fish, turtles, rays and even sharks. We visited 2 local islands - they are very small, not so much to see.

My fourth time on the dohni cruise, it’s a wonderful relaxing holiday, the crew are amazing , and the food from the small galley is amazing too , the cabins are small , but I sleep on deck every night, under the stars which is magical !!

Rick | Traveled in April

This trip was amazing. The room on the boat was small but comfortable and I slept most nights on the deck star gazing. The entire ship was super clean, and we had an awesome chef who made great food. The itinerary is a bit out of date as there is no longer a beach BBQ and the shipwreck snorkel expedition was scrapped because it drifted deep into the ocean and is gone now. Moosa, our guide, was the best. He took us to so many quiet reefs, away from the other tourists to snorkel and was so knowledgeable about the coral and wildlife. This was the absolute best trip I have ever been on.
