A challenging, beautiful, bucket list trek.

This was a most memorable trek and comes highly recommended. It is far less crowded than other routes in the Alps and this brings a real sense of 'getting away from it all". The views are spectacular and surprisingly varied (boulder fields, snow, glacial landscapes etc.). The trek is, however, quite challenging due to the duration of each day; there really is no let up. A significant portion of our group did not complete the full route, as it is very "full on". But if you are fit, don't have significant issues with vertigo and comfortable with very long ascents and descents, it is really a fabulous experience. There was a late snow melt this year, so there were sections which required micro spikes but this was an added bonus and added a real sense of achievement. The food was of high quality and generously proportioned. The tents were spacious and the mountain huts were a fun experience (though not great for sleep!). Overall, a really wonderful trip.

This can be a surprisingly challenging section of the VF if the weather is hot or wet. The daily breakdown chosen by UTracks and their local partners seemed short in length but turned out to be appropriate for the conditions.

Such a beautiful part of the world. Loved the hiking. Some of the days had to be altered because of late snow and impassable trials, but this was done with good thought and still lovely and interesting. Although it was disappointing, we understood that when you are in the mountains you just have to go with the flow - especially as we were hiking on the first week of the season. The accommodation was varied - some stunning places mixed with classic rustic mountain huts but the combination was really nice. All the meals were lovely with a couple of real stand outs. Would recommend as a quieter route compared to tour of Mont Blanc

Travel Tips

  • Taking a train is a great way to see as much beautiful Swiss scenery as possible. Train links entirely cover the small country, and some of the most scenic routes include the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express.
  • Many tourists are surprised to find out they can't use their euros in Switzerland (except in some large cities). Be sure to bring some Swiss Francs with you on your travels.
  • Switzerland is not the destination for a budget traveller. Food and accommodation can be pricey and exchange rates are rarely favourable.
  • Swiss hot chocolate is the best in the world. Don’t miss it.
  • The Swiss are very environmentally friendly and expect everyone to recycle, including visitors. Take the time to figure out what bin is for what type of waste to avoid being called out by the locals, and don’t be afraid to ask if unsure.
  • The Swiss are very, very punctual. That includes their public transportation: trains, cable cars and buses all leave promptly on time. Don't be late!
