- If you are planning on hitting Uruguay's beaches, it is best to visit during peak tourist season of
December to February. Visiting outside the busy months might leave you faced with closed
restaurants, shops and other attractions. - Uruguay is considerably safer than its neighbouring South American countries, but petty crime
still exists. Keep your wits about you and follow typical safety precautions, like keeping your
valuables locked in a hotel safe. - Mate tea is extremely popular in Uruguay, as much a way of life as coffee is in other countries.
This highly caffeinated drink will keep you going all day. - You may encounter street children begging on the streets of Montevideo. Many of these children
are addicted to drugs, and if you wish to help it is advised to give them food rather than money. - Time works very differently in Uruguay. Expect to not eat dinner until after 11pm and to sleep until
noon, unless you want the restaurants and streets entirely to yourself.
