Considered the capital of the north, a visit to Akureyri is an adventure to the extremities of Iceland where, surprisingly, you’ll find a welcoming and picturesque city set on the banks of Eyjafjörður fjord. But don’t be fooled, this city sits on the doorstep of the arctic circle and with only 18,000 inhabitants would be considered just a town by normal standards. Nevertheless, it’s the perfect place to base yourself while exploring the wilderness of Iceland’s north. Akureyri is an oasis of cosy, cool cafes, excellent restaurants and culture in abundance.

  • Akureyrarkirkja is Akureyri’s landmark church, in the typically stark and impressive Icelandic style, looking down over the town from a high hill.
  • Laufás is a manor farm that has been conserved since the 1860s and is well-known for it’s turf roofs.
  • Take a visit to Akureyri Museum, a small but well-established collection of the town’s history.
  • Take a boat tour to the islands of Hrísey or Grímsey.
  • Equestrian enthusiasts should go horse riding in the nearby Akureyri countryside.
  • Many travellers tour to Akureyri in order to go whale watching. Humpback are the most popular, though Minke whales, Harbour porpoises, dolphins and seals are also common. If you’re lucky, you’ll see some Orcas!

  • Akureyri has its own airport 2km from town and is a great alternative destination to Keflavik airport in south Iceland.
  • 5 hours from Reykjavik, hiring a car and driving the Route 1 ring road to Akureyri makes for a fantastic road trip.
  • Iceland is expensive, and while the many delicious restaurants in Akureyri are tempting, cooking your own food where possible with help your budget.
  • July is the driest and warmest month in Akureyri.
