Nicaragua is a nation with a rich history and is home to the third largest city in Central America, Managua. After declaring independence in 1821, some US intervention, and a revolution in the 1960’s, this nation is finally finding its footing. With a mix of lowlands, mountains, and coastlines, there will never be a dull moment during your trip to Nicaragua. With plenty to see and do, this Central American gem is something you don’t want to miss.

Nicaragua Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Nicaragua tours

This was a wonderful Explore tour led by the brilliant and charasmatic Oscar. He was incredibly kind competent and professional. I loved the boat trips and encounters with nature most of all but climbing the cathedral in Leon was amazing with the views of volcanoes, bells and drumming providing a travel experience that will remain forever. Nicaragua is a beautiful country with a complex history which I found fascinating. The accommodation was often outstanding as was the food. A great group of fellow travellers added to the experience and I highly recommend Nicaragua and this trip. Thanks Oscar and Explore for yet another first rate travel experience.

What a fantastic tour! Oscar is an excellent leader giving us insights into Nicaragua's past, present and future e.g. use of green energy. This tour exceeded our expectations with every day bringing at least one memorable experience: hiking volcanoes (the shorter Concepción hike is a challenge, Cerro ***** is unique); beautiful birds (seeing an osprey dive and catch a fish), sloths and excellent howler monkey sightings; roasting chocolate beans and eating the end product! Great accommodation throughout with amazing views on Ometepe, at Selva Negra ecolodge and at Laguna de Apoyo. Finally, we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to release Olive Ridley sea turtle hatchlings into the Pacific, an unexpected and unforgettable experience.

Had a great tour leader - Rene- who gave a wonderful insight into Nicaragua. The itinerary unfortunately was affected by the incessant rain and Rene had to alter it as we went along. Disappointingly we could not do (or see) any of the volcano activities, and wildlife viewing was marred by the constant heavy rain. All of the included activities ( boat rides, coffee farm, chocolate making, farm tour, local lunches at communities etc), were EXCELLENT. As were the optional things we could do (that were not rain affected!!) - eg boat trip on Lake Nicaragua. Love the fact Nicaragua is still developing as a tourist destination and isn't spoilt (yet). Enjoyed my own time for a few days in Granada prior to joining the trip. Felt that the last day was a bit of a "dead" day as we all waited around for airport transfers. Accommodation - Hotel Los Balcones was substandard- not clean, standard of breakfast and staff less than ideal. Do not recommend this place at all. - Selva ***** Ecolodge was lovely in a beautiful setting. - Hotel Pacaya Lodge was exceptional!

This is a great cycling adventure. If you love cycling, have a desire to see wonderful countries and share travel experiences, then this the trip for you. We had a mixture rain forests and rural roads. Everyday had its own highlights!! We even had an option to visit an uninhabited desert island. The tour leader made everything run smoothly and added to the experience.

An excellent trip - quite interesting to note that there don’t appear to be many tourists visiting Nicaragua currently. Possibly due to the political unrest in 2018, though we all felt quite safe.

Excellent experience and great guide

Fantastic trip for my partner and myself. So much so we decided to announce our engagement at the end of the trip! The guide: Roberto was superb...He was relaxed, good fun and very informative providing us with lots of cultural, historical and animal kingdom facts. He really was the best guide we have ever had on a trip with the tour operator and he made the trip for us. We also had a great group of 15 people and we all got on really well. Overall an excellent experience and one we will remember forever...

Nicaragua Tours - Highlights and Travel Trips

Tour Highlights

  • Surf in the beautiful city of San Juan del Sur.
  • Take a chance and go volcano boarding; in short, sled down the side of a volcano.
  • If the mainland becomes too much, retreat to the Corn Islands and take a load off.
  • Go off the beaten path and meet the stone man; a man who carves animals and symbols into the caves in Esteli.
  • Relax; it’s a great place to read a book on the beach, or even in the jungle.
  • Caffeinate in Jinotega, and explore a city with plenty to offer.
  • Watch the turtles at La Flor, just south of San Juan del Sur.

Travel Tips

  • Most hotels will refill your water bottle for USD 0.25; save the environment from the plastic.
  • Don’t fear haggling on your holiday to Nicaragua; it will lower the prices and help you get to know the locals.
  • If you want to, do a homestay and learn Spanish.
  • Don’t expect addresses; most places don’t have them.
  • Don’t exchange money at the airport in Managua; the exchange rate is crazy.
  • Fruit can often be picked right from the trees or from the ground under them.
  • In case of an injury or illness, avoid public hospitals.
  • Pack earplugs; Nicaragua is a country filled with early risers.
