Chile Highlight

What makes Chile unique compared to other destinations in South America?

What makes Chile truly unique is the incredible diversity of landscapes and experiences that the country offers within one single territory. Very few countries in the world allow travelers to experience deserts, glaciers, volcanoes, fjords, lakes, wine regions, vibrant cities, and remote islands all in the same trip. From the otherworldly landscapes of the Atacama Desert in the north to the dramatic fjords and mountains of Patagonia in the south, Chile feels like several completely different countries combined into one. The country is also known for its excellent infrastructure, safety, organization, gastronomy, and high-quality tourism services, making it very comfortable and easy to travel through.

Chile's Hidden Gem

One lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination in Chile and why is it special?

We highly recommend is the spectacular Marble Caves, located in the remote Aysén region of Chilean Patagonia. These extraordinary natural formations were carved by water over thousands of years, creating impressive marble caves, tunnels, and columns with incredible blue reflections from the surrounding glacial lake. The landscape feels almost unreal and remains one of the most unique natural wonders in Patagonia. What makes this destination especially special is not only the beauty of the Marble Caves themselves, but also the journey required to reach them. The surrounding region offers remote roads, dramatic mountain scenery, turquoise lakes, and a much quieter side of Patagonia far from the more traditional tourist routes.

Chilean Way of Life

What are some key cultural insights you think travelers should know before arriving in Chile?

One important thing travelers should know before arriving in Chile is that the country is extremely long and geographically diverse, so cultures, landscapes, gastronomy, and even accents can vary significantly from one region to another. Traveling through Chile often feels like visiting several different countries within one destination. Chileans are generally warm, polite, and welcoming, although sometimes slightly more reserved at first compared to other Latin American cultures. Once conversations begin, travelers usually find people very friendly and helpful. Another important aspect is the strong connection Chile has with nature and outdoor life. National parks, hiking, local food products, wine culture, and regional traditions play a very important role in everyday life, especially in Patagonia and smaller towns outside Santiago. Finally, travelers should know that distances in Chile can be enormous. The country stretches for more than 4,000 km from north to south, so domestic flights and good itinerary planning are often essential when organizing a trip.
Tips for Argentina Travel

Are there any common mistakes travelers make when visiting Chile that they could avoid?

Travelers visiting Chile are often surprised by how geographically diverse and spread out the country is. One of the biggest mistakes is building itineraries that look good on paper but involve too many flights, transfers, or long travel days in a short period of time. Chile is a destination best enjoyed with balance — combining a few regions properly instead of trying to see the entire country in one trip. Spending more time in fewer places usually creates a much more enjoyable experience. Another important thing to consider is climate. Chile contains some of the driest deserts in the world, glacier regions, volcanoes, fjords, beaches, and mountains, so weather and packing requirements can change dramatically depending on where travelers are going. We also always recommend leaving some room for flexibility. Very often, some of the best moments in Chile come from unexpected stops, local recommendations, scenic drives, or simply spending more time enjoying the landscapes instead of following an overly rushed schedule.

Honest insights from past guests on our Chile tours

This trip is fantastic! The itinerary is varied and interesting, the country is beautiful. The hotels were extremely good, the Fundador being more basic than the rest. All the local guides were knowledgeable and helpful. Our guide throughout, Marcelo, was excellent. He was extremely efficient, seamlessly reorganising the programme in Patagonia when necessary due to local conditions. He was very knowledgeable and helpful, always looking out to see everyone was ok. He has a superb sense of humour, skilfully easing some early mornings, long days, and lots of travel. He definitely added to our experience, making it even more enjoyable and memorable.

So many different types of experiences that it’s impossible to compare which is the favorite. The camaraderie of the group? The wine tastings? Ranches, farms, riding a horse? Big city sights? The moving dictatorship remembrance sites in Chile and Argentina? But I will say that Iguazú falls were spectacular!

This tour was excellent in delivering all of the different types of landscape and natural beauty of such a large and diverse beautiful country. Obviously to cover all of this there needs to be long days and early starts but this is clear when booking and absolutely worth it. The tour leader Andre was outstanding. Would highly recommend this tour, we had a fantastic time.

Things to know about this trip I hope will help others (I did the trip in Feb 2026): - follow the packing list in the contiki itinerary PLUS BRING THE FOLLOWING WHICH ARE NOT IN THE CURRENT PACKING LIST: RAIN PANTS, GLOVES, BEANIE AND THERMALS - Hiking poles can be rented for super cheap. I would not have packed them and saved the luggage space if I knew beforehand
